  1. Jews of Argentina Exhibit at Jewish Museum Milwaukee

    Start: October 04, 2015

    End: January 17, 2016

Jewish Museum Milwaukee, a program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation

Explore Argentina’s Jewish community from the perspectives of Milwaukee and the world at a new exhibit running Oct. 4 - January 17 at Jewish Museum Milwaukee, a program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, 1360 N. Prospect Ave. Argentina’s Jewish community is recognized as the sixth largest in the world and the biggest in Latin America. The exhibit, which runs through January 17, features historical context for immigration, societal development and underlying anti-Semitic sentiments. Attendees will have the opportunity to examine Argentina’s neutrality during World War II and how this impacted both Jewish and Nazi immigration, and will leave the exhibit with a sense of Argentine Jewish life and an awareness of broad communal ties, cultural contributions and ongoing challenges. Learn more about the exhibit here  <http://jewishmuseummilwaukee.org>, including special programs and events.

  4. Movie Screening of "Un'tane Tokef" Film

    Start: November 12, 2015

    End: November 12, 2015

Thursday, November 12 at 7 pm
Congregation Sinai (8223 N. Port Washington Rd.)

The film follows the process of composing the song/piut/prayer “Unetane Tokef” by the late Israeli composer Yair Rosenblum while living in kibbutz Beit Hashita in northern Israel. 11 of the kibbutz members were killed in the Yom- Kippur war, more than in any other kibbutz. The musician wrote it in their memory. A legend has it that the words were written in the 13th century by Rabbi Amnon from Magenza in Germany, while being tortured to death for his belief. The ancient words get a completely new meaning when talking about the dead soldiers. Thanks to the film and the song, “Unetane Tokef” has become a symbol for Israeli and Jewish identity.

The film was produced by Yehuda Yaniv, father of our own Israeli Shaliach Amit Yaniv-Zehavi. We owe Amit a great deal of thanks for allowing us to show the movie at Sinai. We also thank Bobbi Rector and the Israel Committee for coordinating the screening.

  5. Winter Concert

    Start: February 20, 2016

    End: February 20, 2016

Congregation Shir Hadash  and Plymouth Church and are presenting a winter concert featuring the Vitrolum Republic. The concert is on February 20, 2016 at 7:30 pm at Plymouth Church. Tickets can be purchased in advance on eventbrite.com or at the door. Prices are $25 adults, $20 seniors, and $5 for all students. There will be a Havdalah service prior to the concert and a dessert reception following the concert.

"The Vitrolum Republic’s style has long defied a succinct summary. Over the past decade in Milwaukee’s music scene, they’ve blended styles from American roots and folk music with elements of blues, rock, singer-songwriter and classical genres. Over time their style has evolved, whether by new influences, collaborations or through experimentation in the studio or in live performances.

Their characteristic sound starts with the musicians themselves, led by brothers Jordan and Nick Waraksa, classically-trained violin and piano players respectively, who together, applied their musicianship to songwriting in order to create and not just perform. Joined by Chuck Lawton(who is a member of Plymouth Church) on bass and guitar and Benjamin Schaefer on percussion, their full ensemble creates a mood unlike no other, taking the listener on a journey through the themes that embody their music.
